Chapter 9 — Two Full Practice Papers

Two complete Math sections, built to the real shape:

Save these for the final weeks. They are most useful once you have worked through the chapters, because a mock taken too early mostly measures what you have not studied yet.

How to sit one

Give yourself 43 minutes per module, which is the official timing for a 27-question module — the same pace as the digital test's 22 questions in 35 minutes, about a minute and a half a question. Do Module 1, take a short break, then Module 2. Use a calculator — you are allowed one on every question.

Work on paper. Write the answer down for every question, including ones you guess: there is no penalty for a wrong answer, and a blank scores the same as a wrong one.

Do not check answers between modules.

Scoring

Count how many of the 54 you got right. That is your raw score. This table converts it to the 200–800 Math section scale, and it is the real conversion table published with official practice test 10 — not an estimate.

Raw score Math section score
0 200
3 210–220
6 220–250
9 250–310
12 310–350
15 340–380
18 370–410
21 390–430
24 410–450
27 440–480
30 470–510
33 490–550
36 530–590
39 560–620
42 600–660
45 640–700
48 680–740
50 730–770
52 770–790
54 800

The score is a range because this simplified conversion is slightly less precise than the one the real test uses. Treat the middle of the range as your estimate.

Two things the table tells you that are worth reading off it. Every question is worth roughly the same, so the cheapest marks are the easy ones you rushed. And the middle of the range is where the gains are largest: moving from 27 right to 39 right is about 120 points, while moving from 45 to 51 is a similar gain for far more work.

Q1Basic

Topic: Solving a linear equation

A baker sells loaves of bread at a market for $6 each and pays $4 a day to rent the stall. On one day the money from the loaves, less the rent for the stall, came to $26. How many loaves did the baker sell that day?

A) 3030

B) 55

C) 133\frac{13}{3}

D) 113\frac{11}{3}

Show the worked solution

Answer: B

Explanation

With xx loaves sold, the money from the loaves is 6x6x dollars, and the rent takes 4 of them away:

6x−4=26⟹6x=30⟹x=56x - 4 = 26 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad 6x = 30 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad x = 5

Check: 6(5)−4=266(5) - 4 = 26 ✓

A is the money from the loaves, 6x=30,6x = 30\mathclose{,} not the number of loaves. C ignored the rent and divided 26 by 6. D subtracted the 4 where it has to be added back.

Takeaway: Add before dividing, and finish the last step.

Q2Basic

Topic: Percentage of a number

A regional council surveyed 240 households about recycling and found that 30% of them separate glass from other waste. The council plans to write to each of those households with information about a new collection service. How many households will receive the letter?

A) 270270

B) 210210

C) 168168

D) 7272

Show the worked solution

Answer: D

Explanation

0.30×240=720.30 \times 240 = 72

C is the 70% who do not separate glass. B subtracted 30 and A added 30. A percentage of something is always a multiplication.

Takeaway: "rr% of bb" means r100×b.\frac{r}{100} \times b\mathclose{.}

Q3Basic

Topic: Slope from two points

A tank is being filled with water at a constant rate. The graph shows the depth of the water in the tank, in centimetres, during the first 6 minutes.

A graph in the xy-planeTime (minutes)Depth (centimetres)012345602468101214161820

At what rate, in centimetres per minute, is the depth of the water increasing?

A) −3-3

B) 13\frac{1}{3}

C) 33

D) 103\frac{10}{3}

Show the worked solution

Answer: C

Explanation

Read the two marked points off the graph: after 1 minute the depth is 4 centimetres, and after 5 minutes it is 16 centimetres.

m=16−45−1=124=3m = \frac{16 - 4}{5 - 1} = \frac{12}{4} = 3

B is upside down, A has the sign flipped, D added.

Takeaway: Rise over run, same order top and bottom.

Q4Basic

Topic: Evaluating a function

The function ff is defined by f(x)=x2−3x.f(x) = x^2 - 3x\mathclose{.} What is the value of f(5)?f(5)\mathclose{?}

A) 4040

B) 2525

C) 1515

D) 1010

Show the worked solution

Answer: D

Explanation

f(5)=25−15=10f(5) = 25 - 15 = 10

A added the 15 instead of subtracting it. C and B each computed one term and stopped.

Takeaway: Substitute into every term, then combine.

Q5Medium

Topic: Expanding brackets

Which of the following expressions is equivalent to (x−4)(x+6)?(x - 4)(x + 6)\mathclose{?}

A) x2+10x−24x^{2} + 10 x - 24

B) x2−2x−24x^{2} - 2 x - 24

C) x2−24x^{2} - 24

D) x2+2x−24x^{2} + 2 x - 24

Show the worked solution

Answer: D

Explanation

x2+6x−4x−24=x2+2x−24x^2 + 6x - 4x - 24 = x^2 + 2x - 24

B has −2x;-2x\mathclose{;} the +6+6 is bigger than the −4,-4\mathclose{,} so the middle is positive. C skipped the middle. A multiplied rather than added them.

Takeaway: Four products, then collect the middle two.

Q6Medium

Topic: A linear equation with a fraction

A water tank is being filled. The volume in the tank, in litres, is given by x4+3,\dfrac{x}{4} + 3\mathclose{,} where xx is the number of seconds since filling began. After how many seconds does the tank hold 11 litres?

There are no options — work the answer out and enter it yourself, in the form the grid accepts.

Show the worked solution

Answer: 32

Explanation

x4=8⟹x=32\frac{x}{4} = 8 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad x = 32

Check: 8+3=118 + 3 = 11 ✓ Enter 32.

Takeaway: Subtract before multiplying up.

Q7Medium

Topic: Mean from a total

A teacher recorded the scores of four students on a recent class test and set them out in the table below. One script was mislaid before its score could be entered.

Student Amara Ben Chen Dara
Score 18 24 19 ?

The mean of all four scores is known to be 21. What was the fourth score?

There are no options — work the answer out and enter it yourself, in the form the grid accepts.

Show the worked solution

Answer: 23

Explanation

The four must total 4×21=84.4 \times 21 = 84\mathclose{.} The three given total 61, so the fourth is 84−61=23.84 - 61 = 23\mathclose{.} Enter 23.

Takeaway: Turn a mean into a total straight away.

Q8Medium

Topic: A system by substitution

At a bake sale, a volunteer sold xx cakes and yy trays of cookies. The number of trays of cookies sold was 2 fewer than 3 times the number of cakes sold. Twice the number of cakes sold, added to the number of trays of cookies sold, is 13. How many cakes did the volunteer sell?

A) 1515

B) 77

C) 33

D) 135\frac{13}{5}

Show the worked solution

Answer: C

Explanation

The two sentences say y=3x−2y = 3x - 2 and 2x+y=13.2x + y = 13\mathclose{.} Substitute the first into the second:

2x+(3x−2)=13⟹5x=15⟹x=32x + (3x - 2) = 13 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad 5x = 15 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad x = 3

Then y=7.y = 7\mathclose{.} Check both: y=9−2=7y = 9 - 2 = 7 ✓ and 6+7=136 + 7 = 13 ✓ A reached 5x=155x = 15 and stopped. D lost the −2-2 altogether, reaching 5x=13.5x = 13\mathclose{.} B gave y,y\mathclose{,} the trays of cookies.

Takeaway: Substitute, solve, then check which variable was asked for.

Q9Medium

Topic: Exponent rules

Which of the following is equivalent to (x3)4x5,\dfrac{(x^3)^4}{x^5}\mathclose{,} where x>0?x > 0\mathclose{?}

A) x2x^{2}

B) x7x^{7}

C) x12x^{12}

D) x60x^{60}

Show the worked solution

Answer: B

Explanation

(x3)4=x12,(x^3)^4 = x^{12}\mathclose{,} then dividing subtracts: x12−5=x7.x^{12-5} = x^7\mathclose{.}

A added instead of multiplying at the first step. C skipped the division. D multiplied everything.

Takeaway: Power of a power multiplies; division subtracts.

Q10Medium

Topic: Ratio

An animal shelter houses only cats and dogs. The ratio of the number of cats to the number of dogs at the shelter is 5 : 3,5 : 3\mathclose{,} and the shelter houses 48 animals in total. How many of the animals are dogs?

A) 33

B) 1616

C) 1818

D) 3030

Show the worked solution

Answer: C

Explanation

5+3=85 + 3 = 8 parts, so one part is 48÷8=6.48 \div 8 = 6\mathclose{.} Dogs are 3 parts: 3×6=18.3 \times 6 = 18\mathclose{.}

Check: cats =30,= 30\mathclose{,} and 18+30=4818 + 30 = 48 ✓ A is the ratio number itself, not a count of animals. D gave the cats. B divided the 48 by 3 instead of by the 8 parts.

Takeaway: Add the parts, find one part, then multiply.

Q11Medium

Topic: A quadratic from its graph

The graph of the quadratic function ff is shown in the xyxy-plane.

A graph in the xy-planexy−5−4−3−2−11234567−18−16−14−12−10−8−6−4−22468

Which of the following could define f?f\mathclose{?}

A) f(x)=(x−3)(x+5)f(x) = (x - 3)(x + 5)

B) f(x)=(x+3)(x+5)f(x) = (x + 3)(x + 5)

C) f(x)=(x−3)(x−5)f(x) = (x - 3)(x - 5)

D) f(x)=(x+3)(x−5)f(x) = (x + 3)(x - 5)

Show the worked solution

Answer: D

Explanation

The graph crosses the xx-axis at x=−3x = -3 and at x=5,x = 5\mathclose{,} so f(−3)=0f(-3) = 0 and f(5)=0.f(5) = 0\mathclose{.}

A function that is zero at −3-3 has the factor (x+3),(x + 3)\mathclose{,} and one that is zero at 5 has the factor (x−5):(x - 5)\mathclose{:}

f(x)=(x+3)(x−5)f(x) = (x + 3)(x - 5)

Check one of them: at x=5,x = 5\mathclose{,} (5+3)(5−5)=8×0=0(5 + 3)(5 - 5) = 8 \times 0 = 0 ✓

Why each wrong option is wrong:

  • A, f(x)=(x−3)(x+5)f(x) = (x - 3)(x + 5) — is zero at 3 and at −5:-5\mathclose{:} both signs are the wrong way round.
  • B, f(x)=(x+3)(x+5)f(x) = (x + 3)(x + 5) — is zero at −3-3 and at −5.-5\mathclose{.} The graph has a positive zero.
  • C, f(x)=(x−3)(x−5)f(x) = (x - 3)(x - 5) — is zero at 3 and at 5. The graph has a negative zero.

Takeaway: A zero at rr means a factor of (x−r),(x - r)\mathclose{,} so the sign in the bracket is the opposite of the sign on the axis.

Q12Medium

Topic: Pythagoras

A rectangular garden plot is shown, with its dimensions in metres. A gardener wants to run a straight path from one corner of the plot to the opposite corner, along the dashed line.

A rectangle158path

What is the length of that path, in metres?

A) 11.511.5

B) 161\sqrt{161}

C) 1717

D) 2323

Show the worked solution

Answer: C

Explanation

The path is the hypotenuse of a right triangle whose legs are the two sides of the plot, 8 and 15:

64+225=289⟹c=1764 + 225 = 289 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad c = 17

The 8–15–17 triple. D added the legs, B subtracted their squares, A averaged them.

Takeaway: Squares add, then take the root.

Q13Medium

Topic: An absolute-value equation

On a number line, the distance between xx and 7 is 4. What is the greatest possible value of x?x\mathclose{?}

There are no options — work the answer out and enter it yourself, in the form the grid accepts.

Show the worked solution

Answer: 11

Explanation

The distance between xx and 7 is ∣x−7∣,|x - 7|\mathclose{,} so ∣x−7∣=4.|x - 7| = 4\mathclose{.}

x−7=4x - 7 = 4 gives x=11;x = 11\mathclose{;} x−7=−4x - 7 = -4 gives x=3.x = 3\mathclose{.} The greatest is 11. Enter 11.

Takeaway: Two cases, then read the wording.

Q14Medium

Topic: A unit rate

A machine in a bottling plant fills bottles at a constant rate of 45 bottles every 4 minutes. At this rate, how many minutes does the machine take to fill 300 bottles?

There are no options — work the answer out and enter it yourself, in the form the grid accepts.

Show the worked solution

Answer: 80/3 or 26.66 or 26.67

Explanation

45÷4=11.2545 \div 4 = 11.25 bottles a minute, so 300 bottles take

30011.25=803=26.666… minutes\frac{300}{11.25} = \frac{80}{3} = 26.666\ldots \text{ minutes}

The decimal never ends, and the grid holds five characters, so it must be filled: enter 80/3, or 26.66 (cut off), or 26.67 (rounded). The shorter 26.7 is marked wrong.

Takeaway: Reduce to a per-one rate, then scale. A decimal that never ends has to fill the grid.

Q15Medium

Topic: The equation of a line

A small business's profit, y,y\mathclose{,} in thousands of dollars, is a linear function of the number of units it sells, x.x\mathclose{.} The table shows two values.

Units sold, xx 2 5
Profit, yy 3 15

What is the yy-intercept of the graph of this function in the xyxy-plane?

A) −5-5

B) 33

C) 55

D) 1111

Show the worked solution

Answer: A

Explanation

3=4(2)+b=8+b⟹b=−53 = 4(2) + b = 8 + b \quad\Longrightarrow\quad b = -5

Check: at x=2,x = 2\mathclose{,} 8−5=38 - 5 = 3 ✓ The slope is 15−35−2=4,\frac{15 - 3}{5 - 2} = 4\mathclose{,} which is where the 4(2)4(2) comes from.

B is the yy-value of the first point, not the value at x=0.x = 0\mathclose{.} D added the 8 instead of subtracting it. C has the sign wrong: 3−83 - 8 is negative.

Takeaway: Substitute the point into y=mx+by = mx + b and solve for b.b\mathclose{.}

Q16Medium

Topic: Exponential growth

A biologist estimates that a lake held 500 fish at the start of a study and that the number of fish in the lake increases by 20% each year. If the estimate is correct, how many fish will the lake hold 2 years after the start of the study?

A) 600600

B) 620620

C) 700700

D) 720720

Show the worked solution

Answer: D

Explanation

500×1.2=600,600×1.2=720500 \times 1.2 = 600, \qquad 600 \times 1.2 = 720

A did one year only. C added 20% of the original twice, which ignores compounding — the second year's 20% is of 600, not 500. B worked out the second year's growth correctly, 120, and then added it to 500 instead of 600.

Takeaway: Percentage growth compounds: multiply, do not add.

Q17Medium

Topic: Simplifying a rational expression

Which of the following is equivalent to x2−16x+4,\dfrac{x^2 - 16}{x + 4}\mathclose{,} where x≠−4?x \ne -4\mathclose{?}

A) −4-4

B) x+4x + 4

C) x2−4x^{2} - 4

D) x−4x - 4

Show the worked solution

Answer: D

Explanation

(x+4)(x−4)x+4=x−4\frac{(x+4)(x-4)}{x+4} = x - 4

B kept the wrong factor. C and A cancelled terms, not factors.

Takeaway: Factor first, cancel whole brackets only.

Q18Medium

Topic: A two-way table

A school recorded which of its 120 students study Spanish and which study history, and set the counts out in the two-way table below.

Studies history Does not study history Total
Studies Spanish 45 25 70
Does not study Spanish 20 30 50
Total 65 55 120

A student who studies Spanish is chosen at random. What is the probability that the student also studies history?

A) 514\frac{5}{14}

B) 38\frac{3}{8}

C) 712\frac{7}{12}

D) 914\frac{9}{14}

Show the worked solution

Answer: D

Explanation

The pool is restricted to Spanish students, so the denominator is 70:

P=4570=914P = \frac{45}{70} = \frac{9}{14}

B used all 120. C is the chance of studying Spanish at all, 70120.\frac{70}{120}\mathclose{.} A counted the other 25.

Takeaway: "Chosen from those who…" fixes the denominator.

Q19Hard

Topic: Interpreting a model

A car rental company charges a fixed amount to hire a vehicle and a further amount for each mile driven. The total cost, in dollars, of hiring a car and driving it mm miles is given by the function C=45+0.30m.C = 45 + 0.30m\mathclose{.} Which of the following is the best interpretation of the number 0.300.30 in this context?

A) The fixed rental fee

B) The cost of each additional mile

C) The total cost of a 30-mile trip

D) The number of miles included free

Show the worked solution

Answer: B

Explanation

The number multiplied by mm is the rate: 30 cents per mile. A describes the 45. C would be $54. D invents something the model does not contain: a number of miles would not be multiplied by m.m\mathclose{.}

Takeaway: In b+mx,b + mx\mathclose{,} the multiplied number is the rate — check the units.

Q20Hard

Topic: A system solved by elimination

A warehouse packs small boxes and large boxes, and every box of one size weighs the same. Together, 4 small boxes and 3 large boxes weigh 26 kilograms. The 4 small boxes weigh 8 kilograms more than one large box does. What is the weight, in kilograms, of one large box?

There are no options — work the answer out and enter it yourself, in the form the grid accepts.

Show the worked solution

Answer: 9/2 or 4.5

Explanation

Let xx be the weight of a small box and yy the weight of a large box, in kilograms. Each sentence gives one equation:

4x+3y=264x=y+84x + 3y = 26 \qquad\qquad 4x = y + 8

Write the second as 4x−y=8.4x - y = 8\mathclose{.} Both equations now have 4x,4x\mathclose{,} so subtract the second from the first:

3y−(−y)=26−8⟹4y=18⟹y=923y - (-y) = 26 - 8 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad 4y = 18 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad y = \frac{9}{2}

A large box weighs 4.5 kilograms.

Check: the second equation gives 4x=8+4.5=12.5,4x = 8 + 4.5 = 12.5\mathclose{,} and then 12.5+3(4.5)=12.5+13.5=2612.5 + 3(4.5) = 12.5 + 13.5 = 26 ✓

Enter 9/2 or 4.5.

Takeaway: One sentence, one equation. Matching terms, subtract — and bracket the second equation so the double negative is visible.

Q21Hard

Topic: The discriminant

In the equation x2+10x+c=0,x^2 + 10x + c = 0\mathclose{,} cc is a constant. The graph of the related function y=x2+10x+cy = x^2 + 10x + c touches the xx-axis at exactly one point. What is the value of c?c\mathclose{?}

There are no options — work the answer out and enter it yourself, in the form the grid accepts.

Show the worked solution

Answer: 25

Explanation

One solution means b2−4ac=0:b^2 - 4ac = 0\mathclose{:}

100−4c=0⟹c=25100 - 4c = 0 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad c = 25

Then x2+10x+25=(x+5)2x^2 + 10x + 25 = (x+5)^2 ✓ Enter 25.

Takeaway: Exactly one solution ⇒ discriminant zero ⇒ perfect square.

Q22Hard

Topic: A circle equation

A circular sprinkler is installed in a field. The set of points it can reach is described in the xyxy-plane by the equation (x+2)2+(y−5)2=36,(x + 2)^2 + (y - 5)^2 = 36\mathclose{,} where distances are measured in metres. What is the radius, in metres, of the region the sprinkler reaches?

A) 66

B) 3636

C) 1818

D) (−2, 5)\left( -2, \ 5\right)

Show the worked solution

Answer: A

Explanation

The right side is r2=36,r^2 = 36\mathclose{,} so r=6.r = 6\mathclose{.} B is r2,r^2\mathclose{,} not r.r\mathclose{.} C halved the 36 instead of taking its square root. D is the centre, (−2,5)(-2, 5) — a point, not a length, and the answer to a different question.

Takeaway: Take the square root of the right-hand side.

Q23Hard

Topic: Similar figures: from an area ratio to a length ratio

Two scale models of the same building are similar solids. The areas of their corresponding faces are in the ratio 16 : 49.16 : 49\mathclose{.} What is the ratio of their corresponding side lengths?

A) 16 : 4916 : 49

B) 4 : 74 : 7

C) 256 : 2401256 : 2401

D) 7 : 47 : 4

Show the worked solution

Answer: B

Explanation

Areas scale by the square of the length ratio, so take square roots:

1649=47\sqrt{\frac{16}{49}} = \frac{4}{7}

So the lengths are in the ratio 4 : 7.4 : 7\mathclose{.} A left the area ratio unchanged. C squared instead of rooting. D took the root and then wrote it upside down.

Takeaway: Lengths k,k\mathclose{,} areas k2,k^2\mathclose{,} volumes k3.k^3\mathclose{.} Go backwards with a root.

Q24Hard

Topic: A composite function

The functions ff and gg are defined by f(x)=x+3f(x) = x + 3 and g(x)=2x.g(x) = 2x\mathclose{.} What is the value of g(f(4))?g(f(4))\mathclose{?}

A) 1111

B) 1414

C) 1515

D) 2424

Show the worked solution

Answer: B

Explanation

Inside first: f(4)=7.f(4) = 7\mathclose{.} Then g(7)=14.g(7) = 14\mathclose{.}

A is f(g(4))=11,f(g(4)) = 11\mathclose{,} the other order — always offered. C added the two separate outputs, f(4)+g(4)=7+8.f(4) + g(4) = 7 + 8\mathclose{.} D multiplied the three numbers in sight.

Takeaway: g(f(x))g(f(x)) means ff first. Work outward from the inner bracket.

Q25Hard

Topic: An inequality in context

A trailer can carry at most 500 kilograms. It already holds a generator that weighs 75 kilograms. What is the greatest number of 35-kilogram sacks of cement that can be added?

A) 1212

B) 1313

C) 1414

D) 1515

Show the worked solution

Answer: A

Explanation

35n+75≤500⟹35n≤425⟹n≤12.135n + 75 \le 500 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad 35n \le 425 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad n \le 12.1

You cannot load part of a sack, so round down to 12.

Check: 12×35+75=495≤50012 \times 35 + 75 = 495 \le 500 ✓ and 13×35+75=530>50013 \times 35 + 75 = 530 > 500 ✓

C forgot the generator. B rounded up — a count of physical objects always rounds down against a maximum. D did both.

Takeaway: Include everything that adds to the load, then round down.

Q26Hard

Topic: Trigonometry

A ramp, the level ground and a vertical support form the right triangle shown, where θ\theta is the angle the ramp makes with the ground. The lengths marked are in metres.

A right triangleθ35

What is the value of sin⁡θ?\sin\theta\mathclose{?}

A) 35\frac{3}{5}

B) 34\frac{3}{4}

C) 45\frac{4}{5}

D) 53\frac{5}{3}

Show the worked solution

Answer: C

Explanation

The side next to the angle θ\theta is 3 and the hypotenuse is 5. By Pythagoras the third side, the one opposite θ,\theta\mathclose{,} is 25−9=4:\sqrt{25 - 9} = 4\mathclose{:}

sin⁡θ=oppositehypotenuse=45\sin\theta = \frac{\text{opposite}}{\text{hypotenuse}} = \frac{4}{5}

A is the cosine, adjacent over hypotenuse. D is greater than 1, which no sine can be. B is adjacent over opposite, 34\frac34 — neither a sine nor a cosine.

Takeaway: Find the missing side first, then read off the ratio you need: sine is opposite over hypotenuse.

Q27Hard

Topic: Working backwards through a percentage

A streaming service raised the price of its annual subscription by 25%. After the increase, the subscription costs $60 a year. What was the price, in dollars, of the annual subscription before the increase?

There are no options — work the answer out and enter it yourself, in the form the grid accepts.

Show the worked solution

Answer: 48

Explanation

The new price is 125% of the old:

1.25×old=60⟹old=601.25=481.25 \times \text{old} = 60 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad \text{old} = \frac{60}{1.25} = 48

Check: 25% of 48 is 12, and 48+12=6048 + 12 = 60 ✓

Taking 25% off $60 gives $45, not $48 — which is exactly why working backwards needs division, not a second percentage. Enter 48.

Takeaway: To undo a percentage change, divide by the multiplier.

Q28Basic

Topic: Solving a linear equation

A diver's depth below the surface, in metres, is modelled by the expression 9−2x,9 - 2x\mathclose{,} where xx is the number of minutes since the ascent began. At what value of xx is the diver 1 metre below the surface?

A) −5-5

B) −4-4

C) 44

D) 55

Show the worked solution

Answer: C

Explanation

−2x=−8⟹x=4-2x = -8 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad x = 4

Check: 9−8=19 - 8 = 1 ✓ B kept the minus after dividing two negatives. D added the 1 to the 9 instead of subtracting it, reaching 2x=10.2x = 10\mathclose{.} A made both slips.

Takeaway: A negative divided by a negative is positive.

Q29Basic

Topic: Reading a linear function

A delivery service charges a fixed handling fee plus an amount for each kilometre driven. The total charge, in dollars, is f(x)=4x+7,f(x) = 4x + 7\mathclose{,} where xx is the distance in kilometres. What is the value of f(0)?f(0)\mathclose{?}

A) 00

B) 44

C) 77

D) 1111

Show the worked solution

Answer: C

Explanation

f(0)=4(0)+7=7f(0) = 4(0) + 7 = 7

A assumed an input of 0 gives an output of 0. B gave the slope. D added the two numbers in the formula, which is f(1).f(1)\mathclose{.} The 7 is the handling fee: the charge before any distance is driven.

Takeaway: f(0)f(0) is the yy-intercept — the constant term.

Q30Basic

Topic: Area of a rectangle

A school is laying artificial turf on the rectangular play area shown, whose dimensions are in metres. The turf is sold by the square metre.

A rectangle127

How many square metres of turf are needed to cover the play area exactly once?

A) 1919

B) 3838

C) 4242

D) 8484

Show the worked solution

Answer: D

Explanation

A=12×7=84A = 12 \times 7 = 84

A added the two sides. B is the perimeter. C halved, which belongs to a triangle.

Takeaway: Area multiplies; perimeter adds. Rectangles have no halving step.

Q31Medium

Topic: An equivalent expression

Which of the following expressions is equivalent to 3(2x−5)+4x?3(2x - 5) + 4x\mathclose{?}

A) 10x−1510 x - 15

B) 10x−510 x - 5

C) 6x−116 x - 11

D) 6x−16 x - 1

Show the worked solution

Answer: A

Explanation

3(2x−5)=6x−15,6x−15+4x=10x−153(2x - 5) = 6x - 15, \qquad 6x - 15 + 4x = 10x - 15

B left the −5-5 undistributed. C dropped the xx from 4x.4x\mathclose{.} D made both of those slips at once.

Takeaway: Distribute across every term, then collect like with like.

Q32Medium

Topic: A proportion

A map of a nature reserve is drawn to scale so that every 4 centimetres on the map represent 10 kilometres on the ground. Two picnic sites are 6 centimetres apart on the map. What is the actual distance, in kilometres, between the two picnic sites?

A) 125\frac{12}{5}

B) 52\frac{5}{2}

C) 203\frac{20}{3}

D) 1515

Show the worked solution

Answer: D

Explanation

Kilometres over centimetres is the same for the map's scale and for the two picnic sites. With xx kilometres between them:

x6=104\frac{x}{6} = \frac{10}{4}

Cross-multiply: 4x=60,4x = 60\mathclose{,} so x=15.x = 15\mathclose{.}

Check: 156=2.5\frac{15}{6} = 2.5 and 104=2.5\frac{10}{4} = 2.5 ✓

A cross-multiplied the wrong pair, 10x=24.10x = 24\mathclose{.} B is the number of kilometres that one centimetre stands for, not the distance. C multiplied 4 by 10 and divided by 6.

Takeaway: Cross-multiply, then check both fractions come to the same decimal.

Q33Medium

Topic: A quadratic solved by factoring

A ball is thrown upward from the top of a cliff. Its height above the ground, in metres, tt seconds after it is thrown is given by h(t)=−5t2+20t+25.h(t) = -5t^2 + 20t + 25\mathclose{.} After how many seconds does the ball hit the ground?

There are no options — work the answer out and enter it yourself, in the form the grid accepts.

Show the worked solution

Answer: 5

Explanation

On the ground the height is zero:

−5t2+20t+25=0-5t^2 + 20t + 25 = 0

Divide every term by −5-5 to make it easy to factor:

t2−4t−5=0⟹(t−5)(t+1)=0⟹t=5 or t=−1t^2 - 4t - 5 = 0 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad (t - 5)(t + 1) = 0 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad t = 5 \text{ or } t = -1

A time of −1-1 is before the ball was thrown, so it is rejected. The ball lands after 5 seconds. Check: −5(25)+20(5)+25=−125+100+25=0-5(25) + 20(5) + 25 = -125 + 100 + 25 = 0 ✓ Enter 5.

Takeaway: "Hits the ground" means height zero. Solve both roots, then let the situation choose: a time cannot be negative.

Q34Medium

Topic: Percentage change

A retailer reduced the price of a jacket at the end of the season. Before the reduction the jacket cost $80, and afterwards it cost $68. By what percent was the price reduced?

There are no options — work the answer out and enter it yourself, in the form the grid accepts.

Show the worked solution

Answer: 15

Explanation

The fall is $12. Percentage change is measured against the original:

1280×100=15\frac{12}{80} \times 100 = 15

Using 68 as the base would give 17.6%, which is the standard wrong answer. Enter 15.

Takeaway: Percentage change divides by the original value, always.

Q35Medium

Topic: Parallel lines

In the xyxy-plane, line kk is parallel to the line y=−3x+8.y = -3x + 8\mathclose{.} What is the slope of line k?k\mathclose{?}

A) −3-3

B) 13\frac{1}{3}

C) 33

D) 88

Show the worked solution

Answer: A

Explanation

Parallel lines have equal slopes, so the slope is −3.-3\mathclose{.} C dropped the sign.

B flipped and negated, which gives a perpendicular slope, 13.\frac13\mathclose{.} D read the intercept.

Takeaway: Parallel copies the slope exactly, sign included.

Q36Medium

Topic: Volume of a rectangular prism

A packing crate is a rectangular prism with the measurements shown, in metres.

A rectangular prism 5 by 4 by 3534

What is the volume of the crate, in cubic metres?

A) 1212

B) 2020

C) 4747

D) 6060

Show the worked solution

Answer: D

Explanation

V=5×4×3=60V = 5 \times 4 \times 3 = 60

A added the three edges. B multiplied only two of the three edges: that is the area of one face. C is half the surface area. Check what the question asked for — a volume is in cubic units, an area in square ones.

Takeaway: Volume multiplies all three dimensions.

Q37Medium

Topic: Median with an even count

A researcher recorded the number of birds visiting a feeder on each of six consecutive mornings. The bar graph shows the six counts in the order they were taken.

Bar chart: Number of birds by Morning024681012MonTueWedThuFriSatMorningNumber of birds

What is the median of the six counts?

A) 66

B) 203\frac{20}{3}

C) 77

D) 88

Show the worked solution

Answer: C

Explanation

Read the six heights off the graph: 4, 9, 2, 11, 6 and 8.

Sorted: 2,4,6,8,9,11.2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 11\mathclose{.} Six values, so average the middle two:

6+82=7\frac{6 + 8}{2} = 7

B is the mean. A and D picked one middle value without averaging.

Takeaway: Sort first. Even count means average the middle pair.

Q38Medium

Topic: A negative exponent

What is the value of 5−2?5^{-2}\mathclose{?}

A) −25-25

B) 125\frac{1}{25}

C) 1010

D) 2525

Show the worked solution

Answer: B

Explanation

5−2=152=1255^{-2} = \frac{1}{5^2} = \frac{1}{25}

A negative exponent gives a small positive number, never a negative one.

A squared the 5 and made it negative. D ignored the minus sign on the exponent. C multiplied 5 by 2.

Takeaway: Negative exponent means reciprocal, not negative.

Q39Medium

Topic: A system with no solution

Two rental firms price a job differently. The first charges according to y=4x+1y = 4x + 1 and the second according to y=kx−3,y = kx - 3\mathclose{,} where xx is the number of hours and kk is a constant. For what value of kk do the two firms never charge the same amount?

A) −4-4

B) −3-3

C) 11

D) 44

Show the worked solution

Answer: D

Explanation

No solution means parallel: equal slopes, different intercepts. So k=4,k = 4\mathclose{,} and the intercepts 1 and −3-3 differ ✓

A has the sign of the slope wrong. C matched intercepts, which would make the lines cross, not miss. B copied the other line's intercept.

Takeaway: Parallel and distinct. Check the intercept after matching the slope.

Q40Hard

Topic: A system solved by elimination

At a small museum, every adult ticket has the same price and every child ticket has the same price. A group that buys 5 adult tickets and 2 child tickets pays $26 in total. The cost of 3 adult tickets is $6 more than the cost of 2 child tickets. What is the price, in dollars, of one adult ticket?

There are no options — work the answer out and enter it yourself, in the form the grid accepts.

Show the worked solution

Answer: 4

Explanation

Let an adult ticket cost xx dollars and a child ticket yy dollars. The two sentences say

5x+2y=263x−2y=65x + 2y = 26 \qquad 3x - 2y = 6

The yy terms are +2y+2y and −2y,-2y\mathclose{,} so adding the equations removes them:

8x=32⟹x=48x = 32 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad x = 4

Then 5(4)+2y=265(4) + 2y = 26 gives y=3.y = 3\mathclose{.} Check both: 20+6=2620 + 6 = 26 ✓ and 12−6=612 - 6 = 6 ✓ Enter 4.

Takeaway: Opposite signs on a variable, add the equations. Then check both originals.

Q41Hard

Topic: The vertex of a parabola

What is the minimum value of the function f(x)=x2+5x+8?f(x) = x^2 + 5x + 8\mathclose{?}

There are no options — work the answer out and enter it yourself, in the form the grid accepts.

Show the worked solution

Answer: 7/4 or 1.75

Explanation

x=−52,f(−52)=254−252+8=74x = -\frac{5}{2}, \qquad f\left(-\tfrac{5}{2}\right) = \frac{25}{4} - \frac{25}{2} + 8 = \frac{7}{4}

Check: f(−3)=9−15+8=2f(-3) = 9 - 15 + 8 = 2 and f(−2)=4−10+8=2f(-2) = 4 - 10 + 8 = 2 — higher on both sides ✓

The question asked for the minimum value, which is the y,y\mathclose{,} not the −52.-\frac{5}{2}\mathclose{.} Enter 7/4 or 1.75.

Takeaway: Find x=−b2a,x = -\frac{b}{2a}\mathclose{,} substitute, and check whether the question wants where or what.

Q42Hard

Topic: Interpreting a scatterplot model

A paediatric clinic recorded the age and the height of each child in a group. The scatterplot shows the data, together with a line of best fit whose equation is y=6x+78,y = 6x + 78\mathclose{,} where xx is age in years and yy is height in centimetres.

A graph in the xy-planeAge (years)Height (centimetres)0123456789101112708090100110120130140150

Which of the following is the best interpretation of the number 78 in this context?

A) The predicted height at age 0

B) The predicted growth each year

C) The number of children measured

D) The oldest age in the study

Show the worked solution

Answer: A

Explanation

The constant is the value at x=0.x = 0\mathclose{.} B describes the 6. C and D are things the model says nothing about: a line of best fit describes a relationship, not the size of the sample or the range of ages.

Takeaway: Constant = value at zero; coefficient = rate. Check the units.

Q43Hard

Topic: An exponential decay model

A laboratory holds a sample of a radioactive substance with a mass of 400 grams. During each hour that passes, the sample decays so that its mass at the end of the hour is 85% of its mass at the start of the hour. Which function gives the mass M,M\mathclose{,} in grams, of the sample after hh hours?

A) M=400(1.15)hM = 400(1.15)^h

B) M=400−0.85hM = 400 - 0.85h

C) M=400(0.85)hM = 400(0.85)^h

D) M=400(0.15)hM = 400(0.15)^h

Show the worked solution

Answer: C

Explanation

Each hour the mass is multiplied by 0.85:0.85\mathclose{:} "is 85% of" gives the factor directly, b=0.85.b = 0.85\mathclose{.}

M=400(0.85)hM = 400(0.85)^h

A grows by 15% an hour instead of shrinking. B is linear: it removes 0.85 grams an hour. D used 0.15,0.15\mathclose{,} the fraction lost.

Takeaway: "Decays to 85%" means b=0.85;b = 0.85\mathclose{;} "decays by 15%" means the same thing. Read which word is used.

Q44Hard

Topic: A line through two points

The table shows two points on a line in the xyxy-plane.

xx −1-1 3
yy 4 16

What is the yy-intercept of the line?

A) 11

B) 33

C) 44

D) 77

Show the worked solution

Answer: D

Explanation

m=16−43−(−1)=124=3m = \frac{16 - 4}{3 - (-1)} = \frac{12}{4} = 3

So y=3x+b.y = 3x + b\mathclose{.} Substitute (−1,4):(-1, 4)\mathclose{:} 4=−3+b,4 = -3 + b\mathclose{,} giving b=7.b = 7\mathclose{.}

Check with the other point: 3(3)+7=163(3) + 7 = 16 ✓

C read a coordinate off a given point; B gave the slope. A put x=1x = 1 in for the point (−1,4),(-1, 4)\mathclose{,} losing its sign: 4=3+b.4 = 3 + b\mathclose{.}

Takeaway: Slope first, then substitute either point for bb — and confirm with the point you did not use.

Q45Hard

Topic: A radical equation

What is the solution to the equation 3x+1=4?\sqrt{3x + 1} = 4\mathclose{?}

A) 43\frac{4}{3}

B) 55

C) 163\frac{16}{3}

D) 173\frac{17}{3}

Show the worked solution

Answer: B

Explanation

Square both sides:

3x+1=16⟹3x=15⟹x=53x + 1 = 16 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad 3x = 15 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad x = 5

Check in the original: 3(5)+1=16=4\sqrt{3(5) + 1} = \sqrt{16} = 4 ✓ — and with radicals the check is compulsory, because squaring can invent solutions.

A added 1 to both sides rather than squaring. C forgot to subtract the 1, and D added it instead of subtracting.

Takeaway: Square, solve, then substitute back into the original.

Q46Hard

Topic: An arc of a circle

The figure shows a circular garden bed with centre OO and a radius of 9 metres. Points AA and BB lie on the edge of the bed, and angle AOBAOB measures 40°.40°\mathclose{.}

A circle with two radii40°9OAB

What is the length, in metres, of the shorter arc from AA to B?B\mathclose{?}

A) 2π2 \pi

B) 4π4 \pi

C) 9π9 \pi

D) 18π18 \pi

Show the worked solution

Answer: A

Explanation

40360=19\frac{40}{360} = \frac19 of the circle. The whole circumference is 2π(9)=18π,2\pi(9) = 18\pi\mathclose{,} so the arc is

19×18π=2π\frac19 \times 18\pi = 2\pi

C is the sector area, a different quantity — an arc is a length. B used 18 as the radius, which is the diameter. D is the whole circumference, with the fraction never applied.

Takeaway: Fraction of the circle, times the circumference for an arc, times the area for a sector.

Q47Hard

Topic: A system in context

A charity received two donations. Together they came to $54, and the larger donation was $12 more than the smaller. What was the smaller donation, in dollars?

There are no options — work the answer out and enter it yourself, in the form the grid accepts.

Show the worked solution

Answer: 21

Explanation

Adding the two statements gives 2x=66,2x = 66\mathclose{,} so the larger is 33 and the smaller is 54−33=21.54 - 33 = 21\mathclose{.}

Check: 21+33=5421 + 33 = 54 ✓ and 33−21=1233 - 21 = 12 ✓ Enter 21.

Takeaway: The smaller of two numbers is sum−difference2.\frac{\text{sum} - \text{difference}}{2}\mathclose{.}

Q48Hard

Topic: A perfect square

The expression x2−18x+c,x^2 - 18x + c\mathclose{,} where cc is a constant, can be written in the form (x−a)2.(x - a)^2\mathclose{.} What is the value of c?c\mathclose{?}

There are no options — work the answer out and enter it yourself, in the form the grid accepts.

Show the worked solution

Answer: 81

Explanation

A perfect square is (x−a)2=x2−2ax+a2.(x - a)^2 = x^2 - 2ax + a^2\mathclose{.} Here 2a=18,2a = 18\mathclose{,} so a=9a = 9 and

c=a2=81c = a^2 = 81

Check: (x−9)2=x2−18x+81(x - 9)^2 = x^2 - 18x + 81 ✓ Enter 81.

Takeaway: Halve the middle coefficient, then square it.

Q49Hard

Topic: Compound percentage

An investment of $800 is placed in an account that earns interest at a rate of 25% per year, compounded annually, and no money is added to the account or withdrawn from it. What is the value of the investment, in dollars, 2 years after it is placed in the account?

A) 850850

B) 10001000

C) 12001200

D) 12501250

Show the worked solution

Answer: D

Explanation

800×1.25=1000,1000×1.25=1250800 \times 1.25 = 1000, \qquad 1000 \times 1.25 = 1250

B did one year only. C used simple interest — 25% of the original $800 twice, which is $400 rather than $450. Compounding earns more, because the second year's interest is on $1000, not $800. A added $25 a year instead of 25%.

Takeaway: Compound interest multiplies by the factor once per period. Compounding always beats simple interest over more than one period, and the gap is the whole point of the question.

Q50Hard

Topic: Function transformation

The graph of y=f(x)y = f(x) passes through the point (3,8).(3, 8)\mathclose{.} Which point must the graph of y=f(x)−5y = f(x) - 5 pass through?

A) (3, 3)\left( 3, \ 3\right)

B) (−2, 8)\left( -2, \ 8\right)

C) (8, 3)\left( 8, \ 3\right)

D) (3, 13)\left( 3, \ 13\right)

Show the worked solution

Answer: A

Explanation

The −5-5 is outside the bracket, so it moves the graph down 5: (3,8)→(3,3).(3, 8) \to (3, 3)\mathclose{.}

B moved sideways, which only happens inside the bracket. C swapped the coordinates. D moved the graph up 5 instead of down.

Takeaway: Outside the bracket moves vertically, in the direction the sign says.

Q51Hard

Topic: Probability from a bar graph

A bag used in a probability demonstration holds red, blue and green counters that are identical apart from their colour. The bar graph shows how many counters of each colour the bag holds.

Bar chart: Number of counters by category02468RedBlueGreenNumber of counters

A student draws one counter at random without looking into the bag. What is the probability that the counter drawn is not green?

A) 13\frac{1}{3}

B) 25\frac{2}{5}

C) 35\frac{3}{5}

D) 23\frac{2}{3}

Show the worked solution

Answer: C

Explanation

The bars show 5 red, 7 blue and 8 green counters. That is 20 counters, of which 5+7=125 + 7 = 12 are not green:

1220=35\frac{12}{20} = \frac{3}{5}

Or take the complement: 1−820=12201 - \frac{8}{20} = \frac{12}{20} ✓

B answered the opposite question. D compared the green counters with the other twelve instead of with all twenty. A assumed three colours means three equally likely outcomes; the counts are not equal.

Takeaway: "Not" means subtract from 1, or count the ones you want directly. Both should agree.

Q52Hard

Topic: Solving for a variable in terms of others

The perimeter PP of a rectangular field is related to its length ll and its width ww by the formula P=2l+2w.P = 2l + 2w\mathclose{.} A surveyor knows the perimeter and the length and needs the width. Which expression gives ww in terms of PP and l?l\mathclose{?}

A) P−2lP - 2 l

B) P−2l2\frac{P - 2 l}{2}

C) P2−2l\frac{P}{2} - 2 l

D) P+2l2\frac{P + 2 l}{2}

Show the worked solution

Answer: B

Explanation

2w=P−2l⟹w=P−2l22w = P - 2l \quad\Longrightarrow\quad w = \frac{P - 2l}{2}

A skipped the division. C divided only the P.P\mathclose{.} D moved the 2l2l across without changing its sign.

Takeaway: Whatever you divide by must divide every term.

Q53Hard

Topic: A perpendicular slope

Line ℓ\ell has equation y=47x−5.y = \dfrac{4}{7}x - 5\mathclose{.} What is the slope of a line perpendicular to ℓ?\ell\mathclose{?}

A) −74- \frac{7}{4}

B) −47- \frac{4}{7}

C) 47\frac{4}{7}

D) 74\frac{7}{4}

Show the worked solution

Answer: A

Explanation

Flip and negate: −74.-\frac74\mathclose{.} Check: 47×−74=−1\frac47 \times -\frac74 = -1 ✓

C is the slope of a parallel line. D and B each did one half of the job.

Takeaway: Negative reciprocal is two steps. Multiply the two slopes; you should get exactly −1.-1\mathclose{.}

Q54Hard

Topic: Putting several steps together

A landscaper is marking out a rectangular flower bed. Its length is 3 metres more than twice its width, and the total distance around the outside of the bed is 42 metres. What is the width of the flower bed, in metres?

There are no options — work the answer out and enter it yourself, in the form the grid accepts.

Show the worked solution

Answer: 6

Explanation

Let the width be w.w\mathclose{.} Then the length is 2w+3,2w + 3\mathclose{,} and the perimeter is

2(2w+3)+2w=422(2w + 3) + 2w = 42 4w+6+2w=42⟹6w=36⟹w=64w + 6 + 2w = 42 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad 6w = 36 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad w = 6

Check: width 6, length 15, perimeter 2(15+6)=422(15 + 6) = 42 ✓

The question asked for the width, not the length — and with no options to warn you, re-reading the final line is the whole safety net. Enter 6.

Takeaway: Define the letter, build the equation, solve, then check which of the two quantities was asked for. This is the last question of the module; do not rush it.

A courier charges a fixed collection fee of $12 plus $5 for each parcel. For one job the total charge was $47. How many parcels were collected?

A) 77

B) 9.49.4

C) 11.811.8

D) 3535

Show the worked solution

Answer: A

Explanation

With xx parcels the charge is $5 each plus the $12 fee, so 5x+12=47:5x + 12 = 47\mathclose{:}

5x=35⟹x=75x = 35 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad x = 7

Check: 35+12=4735 + 12 = 47 ✓ C added the 12 instead of subtracting it. D stopped one step early. B ignored the fee and divided the whole 47 by 5.

Takeaway: Subtract, then divide, then finish.

Q56Basic

Topic: Simplifying an expression

Which of the following expressions is equivalent to 7x−2(x−5)?7x - 2(x - 5)\mathclose{?}

A) 5x+105 x + 10

B) 5x−105 x - 10

C) 9x−109 x - 10

D) 5x−55 x - 5

Show the worked solution

Answer: A

Explanation

−2(x−5)=−2x+10,7x−2x+10=5x+10-2(x - 5) = -2x + 10, \qquad 7x - 2x + 10 = 5x + 10

B kept the constant negative — but −2×−5=+10.-2 \times -5 = +10\mathclose{.} C turned the subtraction of 2x2x into an addition. D subtracted the 2x2x and then carried the 5 down without multiplying it by anything.

Takeaway: A minus before a bracket flips every sign inside it.

Q57Basic

Topic: Reading a graph's intercept

The graph of a line is shown in the xyxy-plane.

A graph in the xy-planexy−2−112345678−8−7−6−5−4−3−2−1123456

What is the yy-coordinate of the point where the line crosses the yy-axis?

A) −6-6

B) 00

C) 1.51.5

D) 44

Show the worked solution

Answer: A

Explanation

The line meets the yy-axis at the point (0,−6),(0, -6)\mathclose{,} so the yy-coordinate is −6.-6\mathclose{.}

C is the slope: the line rises 3 for every 2 it moves to the right. D is where the line crosses the xx-axis, at (4,0).(4, 0)\mathclose{.} B is the value of xx on the yy-axis, not of y.y\mathclose{.}

Takeaway: On the yy-axis, x=0.x = 0\mathclose{.} Each axis zeroes the other variable, so read the yy-intercept where the line meets the vertical axis.

Q58Basic

Topic: Solving a two-step linear equation

A sports club orders printed T-shirts that cost $7 each. The club has a voucher that takes $9 off the total cost of one order, and after the voucher is applied the club pays $33 for the order. How many T-shirts did the club order?

A) 247\frac{24}{7}

B) 337\frac{33}{7}

C) 66

D) 4242

Show the worked solution

Answer: C

Explanation

With xx T-shirts the order costs 7x7x dollars before the voucher and 7x−97x - 9 after it:

7x−9=33⟹7x=42⟹x=67x - 9 = 33 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad 7x = 42 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad x = 6

Check: 42−9=3342 - 9 = 33 ✓

A subtracted the 9 where it has to be added back; D is the cost before the voucher, 7x=42,7x = 42\mathclose{,} not the number of T-shirts; B ignored the voucher.

Takeaway: Undo the subtraction first, then the multiplication — and finish.

Q59Medium

Topic: A quadratic with two roots

What is the sum of the solutions to the equation x2−9x+20=0?x^2 - 9x + 20 = 0\mathclose{?}

A) −9-9

B) 11

C) 99

D) 2020

Show the worked solution

Answer: C

Explanation

Sum of roots =−ba=9.= -\frac{b}{a} = 9\mathclose{.} (The roots are 4 and 5.)

A has the sign wrong: the sum is −ba,-\frac{b}{a}\mathclose{,} and bb is −9.-9\mathclose{.} D is the product, ca=20.\frac{c}{a} = 20\mathclose{.} B subtracted the roots, 5−4.5 - 4\mathclose{.}

Takeaway: Sum =−ba,=-\frac ba\mathclose{,} product =ca.=\frac ca\mathclose{.}

Q60Medium

Topic: A percentage increase

The population of a town was 4500 at the start of a year and 5400 at the end of the year. By what percent did the population of the town increase over the year?

There are no options — work the answer out and enter it yourself, in the form the grid accepts.

Show the worked solution

Answer: 20

Explanation

The rise is 900, measured against the original 4500:

9004500×100=20\frac{900}{4500} \times 100 = 20

Using 5400 as the base would give 16.7%, the standard wrong answer. Enter 20.

Takeaway: Percentage change divides by the original.

Q61Medium

Topic: An exponent equation

A colony of bacteria triples in each observation period. After how many observation periods has the population grown by a factor of 81?

There are no options — work the answer out and enter it yourself, in the form the grid accepts.

Show the worked solution

Answer: 4

Explanation

After xx periods the population has been multiplied by 3 a total of xx times, so 3x=81.3^x = 81\mathclose{.}

Write 81 as a power of 3, so both sides share a base:

81=3×3×3×3=3481 = 3 \times 3 \times 3 \times 3 = 3^4

The equation becomes 3x=34.3^x = 3^4\mathclose{.} With the same base on both sides, the exponents must be equal:

x=4x = 4

Enter 4.

Takeaway: Rewrite both sides over a common base, then match the exponents. The powers of 2, 3 and 5 are the ones this test reuses, so knowing them to the fifth power or so is worth the memorising.

Q62Medium

Topic: A system by elimination

At a café, every sandwich has the same price and every coffee has the same price. A customer who buys 3 sandwiches and 1 coffee pays $14 in total. A sandwich costs $2 more than a coffee. What is the price, in dollars, of one sandwich?

A) 22

B) 33

C) 72\frac{7}{2}

D) 44

Show the worked solution

Answer: D

Explanation

Let a sandwich cost xx dollars and a coffee yy dollars. The two sentences say

3x+y=14x−y=23x + y = 14 \qquad x - y = 2

The yy terms are +y+y and −y,-y\mathclose{,} so add the equations: 4x=16,4x = 16\mathclose{,} giving x=4.x = 4\mathclose{.} Then y=2.y = 2\mathclose{.}

Check: 12+2=1412 + 2 = 14 ✓ and 4−2=24 - 2 = 2 ✓

A gave y,y\mathclose{,} the price of a coffee. B subtracted the 2 on the right instead of adding it, reaching 4x=12.4x = 12\mathclose{.} C added only the left sides, using 4x=14.4x = 14\mathclose{.}

Takeaway: Opposite signs, add the equations.

Q63Medium

Topic: Volume of a cylinder

A cylindrical water butt has the inside radius shown, and it is filled with water to the height shown. Both measurements are in decimetres.

A cylinder of radius 5 and height 454

What is the volume of the water in the butt, in cubic decimetres?

A) 20π20 \pi

B) 25π25 \pi

C) 40π40 \pi

D) 100π100 \pi

Show the worked solution

Answer: D

Explanation

V=πr2h=π(25)(4)=100πV = \pi r^2 h = \pi(25)(4) = 100\pi

A used rr rather than r2;r^2\mathclose{;} C is a surface area. B is the area of the base, never multiplied by the height.

Takeaway: Square the radius, not the height.

Q64Medium

Topic: Function notation

The function gg is defined by g(x)=2x2+1.g(x) = 2x^2 + 1\mathclose{.} What is the value of g(−3)?g(-3)\mathclose{?}

A) −17-17

B) 1919

C) 2020

D) 3737

Show the worked solution

Answer: B

Explanation

g(−3)=2(9)+1=19g(-3) = 2(9) + 1 = 19

(−3)2=9,(-3)^2 = 9\mathclose{,} not −9.-9\mathclose{.} A made that error. D doubled the −3-3 before squaring it, working out (2x)2+1;(2x)^2 + 1\mathclose{;} the square belongs to xx alone. C added the 1 before doubling, working out 2(x2+1).2(x^2 + 1)\mathclose{.}

Takeaway: Square inside brackets: a negative squared is positive.

Q65Medium

Topic: Solving for one variable in terms of another

A caterer spends exactly $24 on trays of sandwiches and trays of fruit. Each tray of sandwiches costs $3 and each tray of fruit costs $4, so 3x+4y=24,3x + 4y = 24\mathclose{,} where xx is the number of trays of sandwiches and yy is the number of trays of fruit. Which of the following expresses yy in terms of x?x\mathclose{?}

A) 24−3x4\frac{24 - 3 x}{4}

B) 3x−244\frac{3 x - 24}{4}

C) 3x+244\frac{3 x + 24}{4}

D) 24−3x24 - 3 x

Show the worked solution

Answer: A

Explanation

4y=24−3x⟹y=24−3x44y = 24 - 3x \quad\Longrightarrow\quad y = \frac{24 - 3x}{4}

Check at x=4:x = 4\mathclose{:} the original gives 12+4y=24,12 + 4y = 24\mathclose{,} so y=3;y = 3\mathclose{;} the answer gives 24−124=3\frac{24-12}{4} = 3 ✓

B has both signs reversed, which makes it the negative of the answer. C kept the 3x3x positive when it crossed the equals sign. D never divided by 4.

Takeaway: Whatever divides must divide every term. Check with one value.

Q66Medium

Topic: Angles in a triangle

Triangle PQRPQR is shown.

A biologist starts a culture with 60 cells. The number of cells in the culture doubles every 3 hours. How many cells are in the culture 12 hours after the biologist starts it?

There are no options — work the answer out and enter it yourself, in the form the grid accepts.

Show the worked solution

Answer: 960

Explanation

123=4\frac{12}{3} = 4 periods, so the factor is 24=16:2^4 = 16\mathclose{:}

60×16=96060 \times 16 = 960

Check by stepping: 60→120→240→480→96060 \to 120 \to 240 \to 480 \to 960 ✓ Enter 960.

Takeaway: Divide the time by the period length to count the periods.

Q68Medium

Topic: Scaling an area

A rectangular poster is enlarged so that both its length and its width become 1.5 times as great as before. By what factor does its area increase?

There are no options — work the answer out and enter it yourself, in the form the grid accepts.

Show the worked solution

Answer: 9/4 or 2.25

Explanation

(1.5l)(1.5w)=2.25 lw(1.5l)(1.5w) = 2.25\,lw

Both dimensions are multiplied by 1.5, so the area is multiplied by 1.52=2.25.1.5^2 = 2.25\mathclose{.} Try it: a 2×42 \times 4 rectangle has area 8; a 3×63 \times 6 one has area 18, and 18÷8=2.2518 \div 8 = 2.25 ✓ Enter 2.25 or 9/4.

Takeaway: Lengths ×k,\times k\mathclose{,} areas ×k2,\times k^2\mathclose{,} volumes ×k3.\times k^3\mathclose{.}

Q69Medium

Topic: Converting radians to degrees

An angle measures 3π5\dfrac{3\pi}{5} radians. What is the measure of the angle, in degrees?

A) 108108

B) 216216

C) 300300

D) 540540

Show the worked solution

Answer: A

Explanation

π\pi radians is 180°,180°\mathclose{,} so put 180 where the π\pi is:

3π5=3×180°5=108°\frac{3\pi}{5} = \frac{3 \times 180°}{5} = 108°

Check the size: 3π5\frac{3\pi}{5} is a little more than half of π,\pi\mathclose{,} so the angle should be a little more than 90°90° ✓

D multiplied the 3 by 180°180° and never divided by 5. B took π\pi as a full turn, 360°.360°\mathclose{.} C used the fraction upside down, 53\frac53 of 180°.180°\mathclose{.}

Takeaway: π\pi radians =180°.= 180°\mathclose{.} To turn radians into degrees, replace the π\pi with 180 and work out the fraction.

Q70Medium

Topic: Probability

A bag used for a classroom demonstration holds 4 white marbles and 11 black marbles, identical apart from colour. A pupil draws a single marble at random without looking into the bag. What is the probability that the marble drawn is white?

A) 14\frac{1}{4}

B) 415\frac{4}{15}

C) 411\frac{4}{11}

D) 1115\frac{11}{15}

Show the worked solution

Answer: B

Explanation

There are 15 marbles altogether, 4 of them white: 415.\frac{4}{15}\mathclose{.}

C used 11 as the denominator, which is the count of the other colour, not the total. D is the chance of drawing black. A treated "4 white" as one chance in four.

Takeaway: The denominator is the total number of outcomes, not the number of the ones you do not want.

Q71Medium

Topic: Slope from a table

The table shows four values of the linear function f,f\mathclose{,} which models the cost, in dollars, of running a machine for xx hours.

Hours, xx 1 2 3 4

What is the slope of the graph of y=f(x)y = f(x) in the xyxy-plane?

A) 14\frac{1}{4}

B) 33

C) 44

D) 1212

Show the worked solution

Answer: C

Explanation

m=21−94−1=123=4m = \frac{21 - 9}{4 - 1} = \frac{12}{3} = 4

D and B each gave one of the two changes without dividing. A divided them the wrong way up.

Takeaway: Slope is a change divided by a change, not either one alone.

Q72Hard

Topic: A perfect-square trinomial

The expression x2+12x+k,x^2 + 12x + k\mathclose{,} where kk is a constant, is a perfect square. What is the value of k?k\mathclose{?}

A) 66

Check: (x+6)2=x2+12x+36(x + 6)^2 = x^2 + 12x + 36 ✓ A halved and forgot to square. B copied the middle coefficient. C doubled the 12 where its half should be squared.

Takeaway: Halve, then square. Two steps.

Q73Hard

Topic: A system of linear inequalities from its graph

In the xyxy-plane shown, the shaded region is the set of all points (x,y)(x, y) that satisfy a system of two inequalities. One boundary line is solid, and the points on it are solutions; the other is dashed, and the points on it are not.

A graph in the xy-planexy−6−5−4−3−2−1123456−6−5−4−3−2−1123456

Which of the following is the system?

A) y≤x−1y \le x - 1 and y>−x+3y > -x + 3

B) y≥x−1y \ge x - 1 and y>−x+3y > -x + 3

C) y≤x−1y \le x - 1 and y<−x+3y < -x + 3

D) y<x−1y < x - 1 and y≥−x+3y \ge -x + 3

Show the worked solution

Answer: A

Explanation

Take the two lines one at a time.

The solid line crosses the yy-axis at −1-1 and rises 1 for every 1 it runs: y=x−1.y = x - 1\mathclose{.} The shading lies below it — at x=4x = 4 the line is at y=3,y = 3\mathclose{,} and the shaded point (4,1)(4, 1) is lower. Solid means the line is included:

y≤x−1y \le x - 1

The dashed line crosses the yy-axis at 3 and falls 1 for every 1 it runs: y=−x+3.y = -x + 3\mathclose{.} The shading lies above it — at x=4x = 4 the line is at y=−1,y = -1\mathclose{,} and (4,1)(4, 1) is higher. Dashed means the line is not included:

y>−x+3y > -x + 3

Check the test point in both: 1≤31 \le 3 ✓ and 1>−11 > -1 ✓

B shades above the solid line, where (4,1)(4, 1) is not. C shades below the dashed line, where (4,1)(4, 1) is not either. D has the right two sides but swaps which line is solid: it would leave out (4,3),(4, 3)\mathclose{,} a point on the solid line, and take in (4,−1),(4, -1)\mathclose{,} a point on the dashed one.

Takeaway: One line at a time: its equation, then a test point for the side, then solid or dashed for the sign. A point in the region must pass both inequalities, so one test point checks an option completely.

Answer: 10

Explanation

30+2g=50⟹2g=20⟹g=1030 + 2g = 50 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad 2g = 20 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad g = 10

Below 10 GB plan A is cheaper; above it, plan B. Enter 10.

Takeaway: "Cost the same" means set the two expressions equal.

Q76Hard

Topic: Composite functions

The functions ff and gg are defined by f(x)=x−4f(x) = x - 4 and g(x)=x2.g(x) = x^2\mathclose{.} What is the value of f(g(3))?f(g(3))\mathclose{?}

A) 11

B) 55

C) 99

D) 1313

Show the worked solution

Answer: B

Explanation

Inside first: g(3)=9.g(3) = 9\mathclose{.} Then f(9)=5.f(9) = 5\mathclose{.}

A is g(f(3))=1,g(f(3)) = 1\mathclose{,} the other order. C is g(3),g(3)\mathclose{,} with ff never applied. D added the 4 instead of subtracting it.

Takeaway: f(g(x))f(g(x)) means gg first — work outward.

Q77Hard

Topic: A circle's centre

In the xyxy-plane, a circle has the equation (x−7)2+(y+1)2=49.(x - 7)^2 + (y + 1)^2 = 49\mathclose{.} What are the coordinates of the centre of the circle?

A) (−7, 1)\left( -7, \ 1\right)

B) (7, 1)\left( 7, \ 1\right)

C) (7, −1)\left( 7, \ -1\right)

D) (−7, −1)\left( -7, \ -1\right)

Show the worked solution

Answer: C

Explanation

(x−h)2+(y−k)2=r2(x - h)^2 + (y - k)^2 = r^2 has centre (h,k),(h, k)\mathclose{,} and the signs flip. (x−7)(x - 7) gives h=7;h = 7\mathclose{;} (y+1)(y + 1) is (y−(−1)),(y - (-1))\mathclose{,} so k=−1.k = -1\mathclose{.}

A copied both signs straight from the brackets. B and D each flipped only one of the two.

Takeaway: Read the bracket, then flip the sign. Both coordinates.

Q78Hard

Topic: A linear inequality in context

A delivery van can carry a load of at most 900 kilograms, and the load includes the driver. The driver weighs 80 kilograms, and each crate that the van carries weighs 60 kilograms. Which inequality gives the possible values of n,n\mathclose{,} the number of crates that the van can carry on one trip?

A) 60n≤90060 n \leq 900

B) 60n+80≥90060 n + 80 \geq 900

C) 60n−80≤90060 n - 80 \leq 900

D) 60n+80≤90060 n + 80 \leq 900

Show the worked solution

Answer: D

Explanation

The load is the crates plus the driver, and "at most 900" means ≤:\le\mathclose{:}

60n+80≤90060n + 80 \le 900

A left the driver out, B points the wrong way, C subtracts a weight that adds.

Takeaway: "At most" is ≤.\le\mathclose{.} Include everything that adds to the load.

Q79Hard

Topic: Interpreting standard deviation

Two classes sat the same test. The table summarises their results.

Class Mean Lowest score Highest score
A 70 68 72
B 70 45 95

Which statement about the two classes is true?

A) Class A has the greater standard deviation

B) Class B has the greater standard deviation

C) The standard deviations are equal, because the means are equal

D) Standard deviation cannot be judged from a range

Show the worked solution

Answer: B

Explanation

Standard deviation measures spread, not centre. Class A's scores sit within 4 marks of each other; class B's span 50. B is far more spread out.

A has the classes the wrong way round. C confuses the two ideas: equal means say nothing about spread. D is too cautious — with every score in class A inside a 4-mark band, no calculation is needed to see which class is more spread out.

Takeaway: Same mean, different spread is entirely possible — that is what standard deviation exists to describe.

Q80Hard

Topic: A system with no solution

Two competing services quote for the same work. The first charges according to y=6x−1y = 6x - 1 and the second according to y=kx+5,y = kx + 5\mathclose{,} where xx is the number of units ordered and kk is a constant. For what value of kk is there no order size at which the two quotes are equal?

A) −6-6

B) −1-1

C) 55

D) 66

Show the worked solution

Answer: D

Explanation

No solution means parallel: equal slopes, different intercepts. So k=6,k = 6\mathclose{,} and the intercepts −1-1 and 55 differ ✓

A has the sign of the slope wrong. C matched intercepts, which would make the lines cross rather than miss. B copied the other line's intercept.

Takeaway: Parallel and distinct. Check the intercept after matching the slope.

Q81Hard

Topic: Putting several ideas together

In the xyxy-plane, the graph of y=x2+bx+7,y = x^2 + bx + 7\mathclose{,} where bb is a constant, passes through the point (2,1).(2, 1)\mathclose{.} What is the value of b?b\mathclose{?}

There are no options — work the answer out and enter it yourself, in the form the grid accepts.

Show the worked solution

Answer: -5

Explanation

Substitute the point into the equation:

1=22+2b+7=4+2b+7=11+2b1 = 2^2 + 2b + 7 = 4 + 2b + 7 = 11 + 2b

2b=−10⟹b=−52b = -10 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad b = -5

Check: 4−10+7=14 - 10 + 7 = 1 ✓

This answer is negative. Enter -5, minus sign included — it counts as one of the six characters a negative answer is allowed.

Takeaway: A point on a graph satisfies its equation. Substitute both coordinates and solve for the unknown constant.

After xx minutes the printer has used 20x20x sheets, so 300−20x300 - 20x are left:

300−20x=120⟹20x=180⟹x=9300 - 20x = 120 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad 20x = 180 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad x = 9

Check: 9×20=1809 \times 20 = 180 sheets used, and 300−180=120300 - 180 = 120 ✓ A divided the 120 sheets that were left by 20; that is how long the rest of the paper would last, not how long the printer had run. C divided all 300 sheets by 20, the time to empty the tray. D added the 120 where it should be subtracted, reaching 20x=420.20x = 420\mathclose{.}

Takeaway: Write what is left as the start minus what was used. Then subtract first, and divide.

Q83Basic

Topic: Translating a sentence into an equation

A number xx is increased by 6, and the result is then multiplied by 3, giving 48. Which equation represents this?

A) 3x+6=483 x + 6 = 48

B) 3(x+6)=483 \left(x + 6\right) = 48

C) x+18=48x + 18 = 48

D) x+63=48\frac{x + 6}{3} = 48

Show the worked solution

Answer: B

Explanation

Take it in the order the sentence gives. "A number is increased by 6" is x+6.x + 6\mathclose{.} "The result is multiplied by 3" multiplies all of that, and a bracket is how that is written:

3(x+6)=483(x + 6) = 48

(Solving it gives x+6=16,x + 6 = 16\mathclose{,} so x=10x = 10 — and 10 increased by 6, then tripled, really is 48.)

A multiplied the number first and added the 6 afterwards. C multiplied only the 6. D divided by 3 where the sentence multiplies.

Takeaway: When an operation is applied to "the result", it applies to everything so far. That is what a bracket is for.

Q84Basic

Topic: Expanding a bracket

Which of the following expressions is equivalent to 4(2x+3)−5?4(2x + 3) - 5\mathclose{?}

A) 8x+78 x + 7

B) 8x+178 x + 17

C) 8x−28 x - 2

D) 2x+72 x + 7

Show the worked solution

Answer: A

Explanation

4(2x+3)=8x+12,8x+12−5=8x+74(2x + 3) = 8x + 12, \qquad 8x + 12 - 5 = 8x + 7

B added the 5 instead of subtracting it. C left the 3 undistributed. D multiplied the 3 by 4 and forgot the 2x.2x\mathclose{.}

Takeaway: Distribute to every term inside, then combine the constants.

Q85Basic

Topic: The slope of a line

The graph of the linear function ff is shown in the xyxy-plane.

A graph in the xy-planexy−3−2−11234567−3−2−1123456789

What is the slope of the graph?

A) 77

B) 22

C) 12\frac{1}{2}

D) −2-2

Show the worked solution

Answer: D

Explanation

Read the two marked points off the graph: (0,7)(0, 7) and (2,3).(2, 3)\mathclose{.} From the first to the second the line falls 4 while it moves 2 to the right:

slope=3−72−0=−42=−2\text{slope} = \frac{3 - 7}{2 - 0} = \frac{-4}{2} = -2

A read the yy-intercept. B lost the minus: the line falls from left to right, so its slope is negative. C is run over rise, the fraction upside down.

Takeaway: Slope is rise over run between any two points of the line. A line that falls from left to right has a negative slope.

Q86Medium

Topic: Reading a linear model

A city taxi firm charges a fixed amount when the journey begins and then a further amount for every mile travelled, so that the total fare in dollars is C=4+2.5mC = 4 + 2.5m for a journey of mm miles. Which of the following is the best interpretation of the number 4 in this context?

A) The fixed charge before any distance is travelled

B) The cost of each mile

C) The number of miles included in the base fare

D) The total cost of a 4-mile journey

Show the worked solution

Answer: A

Explanation

Set m=0:m = 0\mathclose{:} the fare is already $4 before any distance. That is the fixed charge.

B describes the 2.5. C confuses a charge with a distance: the 4 is in dollars. D would be $14.

Takeaway: Substitute zero to see what the constant means, and check the units — dollars cannot be miles.

Q87Medium

Topic: A quadratic built from a rectangle

A gardener uses exactly 22 metres of fencing to enclose a rectangular vegetable plot on all four sides, with no fencing left over. The area of the plot is 30 square metres. What is the length, in metres, of the shorter side of the plot?

There are no options — work the answer out and enter it yourself, in the form the grid accepts.

Show the worked solution

Answer: 5

Explanation

Half the fencing, 11 metres, makes one length and one width. If one side is xx metres, the other is 11−x,11 - x\mathclose{,} and the area is their product:

x(11−x)=30⟹x2−11x+30=0x(11 - x) = 30 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad x^2 - 11x + 30 = 0

Two numbers multiplying to 30 and adding to −11:-11\mathclose{:} −5-5 and −6.-6\mathclose{.}

(x−5)(x−6)=0⟹x=5 or x=6(x - 5)(x - 6) = 0 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad x = 5 \text{ or } x = 6

The sides are 5 and 6 metres. The shorter is 5. Enter 5.

Takeaway: A perimeter gives the sum of the two sides and an area gives their product. Find both roots, then read which one the question asked for.

Q88Medium

Topic: A linear equation with a fraction

A fuel tank was 25\frac{2}{5} full at the start of a trip. During the trip 3 litres of fuel were used, and at the end of the trip 4 litres of fuel were left in the tank. How many litres of fuel does the tank hold when it is full?

There are no options — work the answer out and enter it yourself, in the form the grid accepts.

Show the worked solution

Answer: 35/2 or 17.5

Explanation

Let the full tank hold xx litres. It started the trip with 25x\frac{2}{5}x litres, lost 3, and had 4 left:

2x5−3=4\frac{2x}{5} - 3 = 4

Add 3 to both sides:

2x5=7\frac{2x}{5} = 7

Multiply by 5, then divide by 2:

2x=35⟹x=3522x = 35 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad x = \frac{35}{2}

The tank holds 17.5 litres.

Check: 25\frac{2}{5} of 17.5 is 7, and 7−3=47 - 3 = 4 ✓ Enter 35/2 or 17.5.

Takeaway: Clear the constant first, then the fraction. Substituting back is your only safety net on a grid-in.

Q89Medium

Topic: Exponent rules

Which of the following is equivalent to (2x4)3?(2x^4)^3\mathclose{?}

A) 2x122 x^{12}

B) 8x128 x^{12}

C) 6x126 x^{12}

D) 8x78 x^{7}

Show the worked solution

Answer: B

Explanation

23=8,(x4)3=x122^3 = 8, \qquad (x^4)^3 = x^{12}

so (2x4)3=8x12.(2x^4)^3 = 8x^{12}\mathclose{.}

A left the 2 uncubed. C multiplied the coefficient by 3 rather than cubing it. D added the exponents, 4+3,4 + 3\mathclose{,} where a power of a power multiplies them.

Takeaway: The outside power applies to the coefficient too — and it cubes it, not triples it.

Q90Medium

Topic: A system by substitution

A bookshop sells notebooks and folders. Each notebook has the same price and each folder has the same price. A folder costs $5 more than a notebook, and 3 notebooks and 2 folders cost $25 altogether. What is the price, in dollars, of one folder?

A) 33

B) 55

C) 88

D) 252\frac{25}{2}

Show the worked solution

Answer: C

Explanation

Let a notebook cost xx dollars and a folder yy dollars. The two sentences say y=x+5y = x + 5 and 3x+2y=25.3x + 2y = 25\mathclose{.} Substitute the first into the second:

3x+2(x+5)=25⟹5x+10=25⟹x=33x + 2(x + 5) = 25 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad 5x + 10 = 25 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad x = 3

Then y=3+5=8.y = 3 + 5 = 8\mathclose{.}

Check: 9+16=259 + 16 = 25 ✓ A stopped at x,x\mathclose{,} the price of a notebook. B is the difference between the two prices. D divided the 25 by the 2 folders, as if the notebooks were free.

Takeaway: Substitute, solve, then finish by finding the variable asked for.

Q91Medium

Topic: Area of a triangle

A triangular flower bed has a base of 18 metres and a perpendicular height of 11 metres. A gardener covers the whole bed with mulch that costs $4 for each square metre. What is the cost, in dollars, of the mulch?

A) 9999

B) 198198

C) 396396

D) 792792

Show the worked solution

Answer: C

Explanation

The mulch is paid for by the square metre, so the area comes first:

A=12(18)(11)=99A = \tfrac12(18)(11) = 99

That is 99 square metres, at $4 each:

4×99=3964 \times 99 = 396

D forgot the 12\frac12 — the usual slip — and paid for 198 square metres. A stopped at the area: 99 is a number of square metres, and the question asks for dollars. B multiplied the base by the height and stopped, with no half and no cost.

Takeaway: The half is part of the formula. It is on the reference sheet; copy it before substituting. Then read what is asked for: an area, or what the area costs.

Q92Medium

Topic: An absolute-value equation

What is the sum of the solutions to the equation ∣3x+2∣=14?|3x + 2| = 14\mathclose{?}

A) −163- \frac{16}{3}

B) −43- \frac{4}{3}

C) 44

D) 1414

Show the worked solution

Answer: B

Explanation

3x+2=14⟹x=43x+2=−14⟹x=−1633x + 2 = 14 \Longrightarrow x = 4 \qquad 3x + 2 = -14 \Longrightarrow x = -\tfrac{16}{3}

Their sum is 4−163=−43.4 - \frac{16}{3} = -\frac43\mathclose{.}

C and A each kept one case only. D is the right-hand side of the equation, not a value of x.x\mathclose{.}

Takeaway: Absolute value gives two cases, and "sum of all possible values" needs both of them.

Q93Medium

Topic: Reading an exponential model

A company buys a machine for its factory. The value V,V\mathclose{,} in dollars, of the machine tt years after it was bought is modelled by the equation V=12000(0.9)t.V = 12000(0.9)^t\mathclose{.} Which of the following is the best interpretation of the number 0.90.9 in this context?

A) The machine loses 90% of its value each year

B) The machine loses 10% of its value each year

C) The machine gains 90% of its value each year

D) The machine is worth $0.90 after tt years

Show the worked solution

Answer: B

Explanation

The factor is what remains: 1−0.9=0.1,1 - 0.9 = 0.1\mathclose{,} so 10% is lost each year.

Check: 12000×0.9=10800,12000 \times 0.9 = 10800\mathclose{,} a drop of 1200, which is 10% of 12000 ✓

A read the factor as the loss. C reads a factor below 1 as growth; it shrinks. D treats the 0.9 as a value in dollars — it multiplies the value, it is not the value.

Takeaway: The factor is what survives. Subtract from 1 for the percentage lost.

Q94Hard

Topic: A three-part inequality

What is the greatest integer xx that satisfies 5<3x−1≤20?5 < 3x - 1 \le 20\mathclose{?}

There are no options — work the answer out and enter it yourself, in the form the grid accepts.

Show the worked solution

Answer: 7

Explanation

Add 1 to all three parts: 6<3x≤21.6 < 3x \le 21\mathclose{.} Divide by 3: 2<x≤7.2 < x \le 7\mathclose{.}

The greatest integer is 7, and the right end is inclusive so 7 is allowed.

Check: at x=7x = 7 the middle is 20, and 20≤2020 \le 20 ✓ At x=8x = 8 it is 23, which is too big ✓ Enter 7.

Takeaway: Every step to all three parts. Then check whether the end you want is inclusive.

Q95Hard

Topic: The discriminant

In the equation x2−7x+c=0,x^2 - 7x + c = 0\mathclose{,} cc is a constant. The graph of the related function touches the xx-axis at exactly one point. What is the value of c?c\mathclose{?}

There are no options — work the answer out and enter it yourself, in the form the grid accepts.

Show the worked solution

Answer: 49/4 or 12.25

Explanation

One solution means b2−4ac=0:b^2 - 4ac = 0\mathclose{:}

49−4c=0⟹c=49449 - 4c = 0 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad c = \frac{49}{4}

Then x2−7x+494=(x−72)2x^2 - 7x + \frac{49}{4} = \left(x - \frac{7}{2}\right)^2 ✓ Enter 49/4 or 12.25.

Takeaway: One solution ⇒ discriminant zero ⇒ perfect square.

Q96Hard

Topic: Perpendicular lines

In the xyxy-plane, line pp is perpendicular to the line y=58x−2.y = \frac{5}{8}x - 2\mathclose{.} What is the slope of line p?p\mathclose{?}

A) −85- \frac{8}{5}

B) −58- \frac{5}{8}

C) 58\frac{5}{8}

D) 85\frac{8}{5}

Show the worked solution

Answer: A

Explanation

Flip and negate: −85.-\frac85\mathclose{.} Check: 58×−85=−1\frac58 \times -\frac85 = -1 ✓

C is the slope of a parallel line. D and B each did one half of the job.

Takeaway: Negative reciprocal means both steps. Multiply the two slopes; you should get exactly −1.-1\mathclose{.}

Q97Hard

Topic: A system built from a situation

A stationery shop sells pens at $3 each and notebooks at $7 each, and every item sold is one or the other. A customer buys 10 items altogether and pays $54 in total. How many notebooks did the customer buy?

A) 44

B) 66

C) 1010

D) 1818

Show the worked solution

Answer: B

Explanation

Let pp be pens and nn notebooks:

p+n=103p+7n=54p + n = 10 \qquad 3p + 7n = 54

Substituting p=10−n:p = 10 - n\mathclose{:} 30−3n+7n=54,30 - 3n + 7n = 54\mathclose{,} so 4n=244n = 24 and n=6.n = 6\mathclose{.}

Check: 4 pens and 6 notebooks give 12+42=5412 + 42 = 54 ✓

A is the pen count — both come out, and the question named notebooks. C is the total number of items. D divided all the money by the price of a pen, as if only pens were bought.

Takeaway: One equation counts the items, the other the money. Then read which count was asked for.

Q98Hard

Topic: A function transformation

The graph of y=f(x)y = f(x) passes through the point (5,2).(5, 2)\mathclose{.} Which point must the graph of y=f(x+3)y = f(x + 3) pass through?

A) (2, 2)\left( 2, \ 2\right)

B) (8, 2)\left( 8, \ 2\right)

C) (5, 5)\left( 5, \ 5\right)

D) (5, −1)\left( 5, \ -1\right)

Show the worked solution

Answer: A

Explanation

The change is inside the bracket, so it is horizontal and goes opposite to the sign: f(x+3)f(x + 3) moves the graph left 3.

Track the point: we want the input making the bracket equal 5, so x+3=5x + 3 = 5 and x=2.x = 2\mathclose{.} Then (2,2).(2, 2)\mathclose{.}

B moved right, following the plus sign. C and D moved the point up and down, which is what a change outside the bracket does.

Takeaway: Inside the bracket, opposite to the sign. Track one known point.

Q99Hard

Topic: An exponential decay factor

Ecologists have monitored the birds of one species in a coastal region for several years. The number PP of birds of that species in the region tt years after the monitoring began is modelled by the equation P=8000(0.94)t.P = 8000(0.94)^t\mathclose{.} Which of the following statements is best supported by the model?

A) The population falls by 94% each year

B) The population falls by 800 each year

C) The population falls by 6% each year

D) The population grows by 6% each year

Show the worked solution

Answer: C

Explanation

The factor 0.940.94 is what remains, so 1−0.94=0.061 - 0.94 = 0.06 is lost: 6% a year.

Check: 8000×0.94=7520,8000 \times 0.94 = 7520\mathclose{,} a drop of 480, and 4808000=0.06\frac{480}{8000} = 0.06 ✓

A read the factor as the loss. B would be a linear model. D has the size right and the direction wrong: a factor below 1 shrinks.

Takeaway: The factor is what survives. Subtract from 1 for the percentage lost.

Q100Hard

Topic: Simplifying a rational expression

Which of the following is equivalent to 3x2−12x−2,\dfrac{3x^2 - 12}{x - 2}\mathclose{,} where x≠2?x \ne 2\mathclose{?}

A) 3(x+2)3 \left(x + 2\right)

B) 3(x−2)3 \left(x - 2\right)

C) 3x2−63 x^{2} - 6

D) 3x+23 x + 2

Show the worked solution

Answer: A

Explanation

Take out the 3, then use the difference of two squares:

3x2−12=3(x2−4)=3(x+2)(x−2)3x^2 - 12 = 3(x^2 - 4) = 3(x + 2)(x - 2)

3(x+2)(x−2)x−2=3(x+2)\frac{3(x+2)(x-2)}{x - 2} = 3(x + 2)

Check at x=0:x = 0\mathclose{:} the original is −12−2=6,\frac{-12}{-2} = 6\mathclose{,} and 3(2)=63(2) = 6 ✓

B cancelled the wrong bracket. C cancelled the xx under 3x23x^2 and the 2 under the 12 — terms, not factors. D forgot that the 3 multiplies the whole bracket.

Takeaway: Common factor, then the pattern, then cancel whole brackets.

Q101Hard

Topic: An inequality with the variable on both sides

A bowling alley has two ways to pay. A member pays a one-time fee of $48 and then $12 for each game. A non-member pays no fee and pays $20 for each game. What is the least number of games for which a member pays less in total than a non-member?

There are no options — work the answer out and enter it yourself, in the form the grid accepts.

Show the worked solution

Answer: 7

Explanation

After xx games a member has paid 48+12x48 + 12x dollars and a non-member 20x.20x\mathclose{.} The member has paid less when

48+12x<20x48 + 12x < 20x

Subtract 12x:12x\mathclose{:} 48<8x.48 < 8x\mathclose{.} Divide by 8, which is positive, so nothing flips:

x>6x > 6

The inequality is strict: after 6 games both have paid 120 dollars, which is the same, not less. The least number of games is 7.

Check: at x=7,x = 7\mathclose{,} 132<140132 < 140 ✓ At x=6,x = 6\mathclose{,} 120<120120 < 120 is false ✓ Enter 7.

Takeaway: "Less than" is a strict inequality. At the break-even point nobody has paid less, so the answer is the next whole number up.

Q102Hard

Topic: A factor of a polynomial

The function ff is defined by f(x)=x3−4x2+kx+6,f(x) = x^3 - 4x^2 + kx + 6\mathclose{,} where kk is a constant. If x−2x - 2 is a factor of f(x),f(x)\mathclose{,} what is the value of k?k\mathclose{?}

There are no options — work the answer out and enter it yourself, in the form the grid accepts.

Show the worked solution

Answer: 1

Explanation

A factor is zero exactly where the function is zero. So if x−2x - 2 is a factor, then f(2)=0:f(2) = 0\mathclose{:}

f(2)=23−4(22)+2k+6=8−16+2k+6=2k−2f(2) = 2^3 - 4(2^2) + 2k + 6 = 8 - 16 + 2k + 6 = 2k - 2

2k−2=0⟹k=12k - 2 = 0 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad k = 1

Check: with k=1,k = 1\mathclose{,} f(2)=8−16+2+6=0f(2) = 8 - 16 + 2 + 6 = 0 ✓ Enter 1.

Note the sign. The factor is x−2,x - 2\mathclose{,} and the number to substitute is +2+2 — the value that makes the factor zero.

Takeaway: x−ax - a is a factor exactly when f(a)=0.f(a) = 0\mathclose{.} Substitute the value that makes the factor zero, and solve for the constant.

D) 4040

Show the worked solution

Answer: A

Explanation

25+4n=65⟹4n=40⟹n=1025 + 4n = 65 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad 4n = 40 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad n = 10

Check: 25+40=6525 + 40 = 65 ✓ B ignored the monthly fee. C added it to the 65 instead of subtracting. D stopped at 4n=40.4n = 40\mathclose{.}

Takeaway: "Cost the same" sets the two expressions equal. Subtract the fixed part before dividing.

Q104Hard

Topic: The vertex of a parabola

A company runs a generator for part of each day. The daily running cost, in dollars, is modelled by y=x2−12x+40,y = x^2 - 12x + 40\mathclose{,} where xx is the number of hours for which the generator runs that day. According to the model, what is the minimum daily running cost, in dollars?

A) −6-6

B) 44

C) 66

D) 4040

Show the worked solution

Answer: B

Explanation

x=−−122=6,y=36−72+40=4x = -\frac{-12}{2} = 6, \qquad y = 36 - 72 + 40 = 4

Check: f(5)=25−60+40=5f(5) = 25 - 60 + 40 = 5 and f(7)=49−84+40=5f(7) = 49 - 84 + 40 = 5 — higher on both sides ✓

C gave where the minimum is; the question asked what it is. D is the cost at x=0.x = 0\mathclose{.} A has the sign of the vertex wrong.

Takeaway: Find x=−b2a,x = -\frac{b}{2a}\mathclose{,} then substitute. Read which of the two numbers is wanted.

Q105Hard

Topic: Scaling two dimensions of a solid

The radius of a right circular cone is tripled and its height is halved. The volume of the new cone is how many times the volume of the original cone?

A) 1.51.5

B) 4.54.5

C) 99

D) 1818

Show the worked solution

Answer: B

Explanation

From the reference sheet, V=13πr2h.V = \frac13 \pi r^2 h\mathclose{.} Put the new measurements in:

13π(3r)2(h2)=13π⋅9r2⋅h2=92×(13πr2h)\frac13 \pi (3r)^2 \left(\frac{h}{2}\right) = \frac13 \pi \cdot 9r^2 \cdot \frac{h}{2} = \frac92 \times \left(\frac13 \pi r^2 h\right)

The volume is multiplied by 92=4.5.\frac92 = 4.5\mathclose{.} The radius is squared in the formula, so tripling it multiplies the volume by 9; the height is not, so halving it multiplies by 12;\frac12\mathclose{;} and 9×12=4.5.9 \times \frac12 = 4.5\mathclose{.}

A multiplied by 3 and by 12,\frac12\mathclose{,} forgetting that the radius is squared. C tripled the radius correctly and ignored the height. D doubled the height where the question halves it.

Takeaway: Give each changed dimension the power it has in the formula, then multiply the factors together.

Q106Hard

Topic: Trigonometry in context

A builder is installing a wheelchair ramp that rises at an angle of 12°12° to the horizontal ground, and the sloping surface of the ramp measures 9 metres from end to end. Building regulations require the vertical rise to be recorded. Which expression gives that height, in metres?

A) 9sin⁡12°9 \sin 12°

B) 9cos⁡12°9 \cos 12°

C) 9sin⁡12°\dfrac{9}{\sin 12°}

D) 9tan⁡12°9 \tan 12°

Show the worked solution

Answer: A

Explanation

The ramp is the hypotenuse and the height is opposite the 12°12° angle. Opposite and hypotenuse means sine:

sin⁡12°=h9⟹h=9sin⁡12°\sin 12° = \frac{h}{9} \quad\Longrightarrow\quad h = 9\sin 12°

Sanity-check the size: the height must be less than the 9 m ramp. Sine of an acute angle is under 1, so multiplying shrinks it ✓ C divides, giving about 43 m — a ramp 9 m long cannot rise 43 m. B is the horizontal distance the ramp covers, the side adjacent to the angle. D would be right if the 9 m were measured along the ground instead of along the ramp.

Takeaway: Label hypotenuse, opposite and adjacent, then pick the ratio. Check the answer's size against the geometry.

Q107Hard

Topic: A radical equation with an extraneous solution

What is the solution to the equation x+6=x?\sqrt{x + 6} = x\mathclose{?}

A) −2-2

B) 11

C) 33

D) 66

Show the worked solution

Answer: C

Explanation

Square both sides to clear the root:

x+6=x2x + 6 = x^2

Bring everything to one side and factor:

x2−x−6=0⟹(x−3)(x+2)=0x^2 - x - 6 = 0 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad (x - 3)(x + 2) = 0

So the squared equation has two solutions, x=3x = 3 and x=−2.x = -2\mathclose{.} Both must now be tested in the original equation, because squaring turns a false statement into a true one — −2≠2,-2 \ne 2\mathclose{,} but (−2)2=22.(-2)^2 = 2^2\mathclose{.}

At x=3:x = 3\mathclose{:} 3+6=9=3\sqrt{3 + 6} = \sqrt{9} = 3 ✓

At x=−2:x = -2\mathclose{:} −2+6=4=2,\sqrt{-2 + 6} = \sqrt{4} = 2\mathclose{,} and 2≠−22 \ne -2 ✗

The square-root symbol means the non-negative root, so it can never equal a negative number. x=−2x = -2 is extraneous — it was manufactured by the squaring.

x=3x = 3

Why each wrong option is wrong:

  • A, −2-2 — kept the extraneous root without testing it. This is the whole point of the question: squaring is not a reversible step.
  • B, 11 — added the two roots of the squared equation. The question asks for the solution, not for a sum.
  • D, 66 — doubled the right-hand side instead of squaring the left, solving x+6=2x.x + 6 = 2x\mathclose{.}

Takeaway: whenever you square both sides, every solution you find is only a candidate. Substitute each one back into the original equation. A square root is never negative, so an equation like   ⋅  =x\sqrt{\;\cdot\;} = x has no solution where x<0.x < 0\mathclose{.}

Topic: Several steps together

The rectangular practice area shown is twice as long as it is wide, and the distance around the outside of it is 54 metres.

A rectangle2ww

What is the area of the practice area, in square metres?

There are no options — work the answer out and enter it yourself, in the form the grid accepts.

Show the worked solution

Answer: 162

Explanation

Let the width be w;w\mathclose{;} the length is 2w.2w\mathclose{.} The perimeter:

2(2w)+2w=6w=54⟹w=92(2w) + 2w = 6w = 54 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad w = 9

So the width is 9 and the length 18. The question asks for the area:

18×9=16218 \times 9 = 162

Check the perimeter: 2(18+9)=542(18 + 9) = 54 ✓

Two traps in one question. The first is stopping at w=9;w = 9\mathclose{;} the second is giving the perimeter-shaped answer. With no options to warn you, re-read the last line. Enter 162.

Takeaway: Solve for the unknown, then do the extra step the question actually asks for. This is the last question of the paper — read it twice.
